Janmashtami is also popularly known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual celebration of the birth of the Lord Krishna. Krishna was the eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva King & Queen of Yadavas from Mathura (in the present-day Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh) was the capital of the Yadavas in those days.
As per the astrological calculations, Krishna’s birth, is 18 July 3228 BCE and he lived until 18 February 3102 BCE. Most of the Hindus celebrate Krishnashtami by fasting, worshipping Lord Krishna and staying up until midnight by offering prayers. Some of the temples through out India and rest of the World also carry out reading of the Hindu religious scripture Bhagavad Gita.
